I just found out about this and am shocked. Please take a minute to send your comments before the end of the day on Friday. Thanks to Jill and her friend Karen for the heads up).
The bright idea to spend 3.5 billion dollars on a new nuclear bomb facility in Oak Ridge Tennessee, just 140 miles away from Asheville, will be finalized by the end of Friday, January 29th.
Citizen comments are needed before that to stop this dangerous, wasteful project. The document is called the Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement for the Y-12 National Security Complex, aka Y12SWEIS. You can read it here

Points to make:
- You prefer the OREPA (Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance) alternative 6, which would cost 100 million and would not include the actual making of nuclear bombs in Oak Ridge
- It is senseless and irresponsible to spend billions on a facility which, by the time it is completed in 2018, will no longer be needed because the US stockpile of "life extended" warheads will exceed the number allowed by the START treaty at that point.
- 2,500 jobs would be lost in Oak Ridge with the new facility, since it would be largely automated.
Time is running out. If enough citizens say they want OREPA alternative 6, plans for the new bomb making facility will be halted. Your voice can make a difference. Here's a pdf with more detailed info on Alternative 6 and the other proposals on the table (click on updated talking points).
peace,
Jen
