I saw on Alton Brown's Good Eats where he used a standard box fan as a food dryer/dehydrator. Maybe that will work?

Thanks, I've seen some dehydrator plans on Mother Earth News too. i'll just put it on the long list of things to do around here someday.

They are not exactly food, but herbs are another easy thing to preserve by drying. I found this collection of tips for drying herbs . It seems like a good primer on how to get started.

Thanks Nicky but I don't see a link. Speaking of links I found the DIY dehydrator article in Mother Earth News: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/2006-08-01/Build-a-Solar-Food-Dehydrator.aspx
